Integrative Psychiatric Care
Integrative psychiatric care from a naturopathic doctor combines conventional psychiatric treatments with natural and holistic approaches to mental health. This type of care is designed to address the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—using a variety of therapies. Here’s what you can typically expect:
-
Comprehensive Assessment: The process usually starts with a thorough evaluation of your mental and physical health, lifestyle, and medical history. This helps the doctor create a personalized treatment plan.
-
Holistic Treatments: Treatment plans may include a combination of natural therapies such as herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, and lifestyle modifications.
-
Mind-Body Techniques: Techniques like mindfulness, meditation, and stress management strategies are often integrated to support mental well-being.
-
Medication Management: Naturopathic doctors can prescribe conventional medications if necessary, but they often focus on minimizing medication use and exploring natural alternatives.
-
Telemedicine: Many naturopathic doctors offer online consultations, making it convenient to access care from the comfort of your home. This can include video or phone sessions to discuss your progress and adjust treatments as needed.
-
Collaborative Approach: Integrative psychiatric care often involves working closely with other healthcare providers to ensure a comprehensive approach to your mental health.

This approach aims to not only alleviate symptoms but also address the root causes of mental health issues, promoting long-term wellness.
Naturopathy
Naturopathic medicine is a healthcare system that blends Western medicine and holistic therapies to provide an opportunity for healing and wellness. Naturopathic doctors attend a four-year naturopathic medical school and are clinically trained to work in all aspects of family health. They receive education in pharmacology, botanical medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, physical manipulations, nutrition, and counseling. Licensed naturopathic doctors can order laboratory testing and diagnose, monitor, and treat illness and disease. They work to establish health by adhering to the following principles listed below:

Naturopathic Principles:
First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)
Naturopathic medicine follows this principle to avoid harming the patient. They conduct this by utilizing methods and medicinal substances that reduce the risk of harm. As a rule, they will use the most minor force necessary to treat an illness. As the saying goes, "Why use a steak knife when a butter knife will do?"

The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)
Naturopathic doctors recognize the body's innate ability to heal itself. This is often termed as the vital force.
Naturopathic doctors utilize modalities that help stimulate the necessary force to promote healing. These modalities consist of acupuncture, homeopathy, and hydrotherapy.
Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam)
Naturopathic medicine emphasizes the importance of addressing the root cause of one's illness instead of suppressing the symptoms.

Doctor as Teacher (Docere)
Naturopathic physicians empower patients to take charge of their health by teaching and instructing them how to do so. They respect and value the therapeutic relationship between doctor and patient. Shared decision-making is encouraged whenever possible.

Treat the Whole Person (Tolle Totem)
Naturopathic physicians emphasize the importance of treating each person as a whole. They evaluate and address a patient's physical, emotional, mental, genetic, environmental, and spiritual health to balance them.

Prevention (Prevenir)
Naturopathic physicians emphasize disease prevention by assessing one's risk factors, family history, lifestyle, and genetics to prevent illness or disease. They work to provide an opportunity for optimal healing and wellness to occur.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a modality of medicine that originated in Germany hundreds of years ago. Homeopathic remedies are often presented as pellets, creams, or gels. They are derived from diluted substances such as plants, minerals, and animal products. The substance is diluted hundreds of times so that no substance will be found in that remedy if tested. It is believed that dilution allows for the extraction of the energetic essence of that substance. Homeopathy is based upon what is known as the theory of the “Law of Similar’s.” This is the principle of “like cures,” where an illness can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in otherwise healthy individuals. Think of someone feeling down or angry; they often gravitate towards sad or angry music to feel better. We also see this play out in the conventional world, where a child with ADHD is prescribed a stimulant (Adderall/Ritalin) to calm down. These are examples based upon the Law of Similar’s.

How Does It Work?

Hundreds of studies show homeopathic medicine is practical. However, the exact mechanism of action has yet to be discovered. This is one of those scenarios where science hasn’t entirely caught up yet. Several theories exist. Physicists acknowledge that everything on Earth vibrates at a specific energetic frequency. One theory is that one’s disease or illness also carries its own frequency. When that disease or illness is matched with a homeopathic remedy of the same frequency, it is believed they cancel each other out. This brings the patient back to their original state of health. For example, when peels an onion, their eyes often burn and itch. One will often experience watery eyes and a runny nose. These are usually the symptoms experienced by those who suffer from seasonal allergies. To address this, the homeopathic remedy of Allium cepa, which is derived from red onions, is often used.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. It's based on the concept of balancing the body's energy flow, known as "qi" (pronounced "chee"). Here are some key points about acupuncture:
-
Energy Flow: Practitioners believe that qi flows through pathways in the body called meridians. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, they aim to restore balance and promote healing.
-
Pain Relief: Acupuncture is commonly used to relieve various types of pain, including headaches, back pain, and arthritis.
-
Holistic Approach: It is often used as part of a holistic approach to health, addressing physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
-
Scientific Research: Some studies suggest that acupuncture can stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which may boost the body's natural painkillers and increase blood flow.
-
Conditions Treated: Besides pain, acupuncture is used to treat conditions like nausea, stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

A typical acupuncture session involves several steps designed to ensure a comfortable and effective treatment. Here's what you can generally expect:
-
Initial Consultation: The session usually begins with a consultation where the acupuncturist asks about your health history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. This helps them tailor the treatment to your specific needs.
-
Preparation: You'll be asked to lie down on a treatment table, and the acupuncturist will identify the points on your body where the needles will be inserted. It's important to wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to these points.
-
Needle Insertion: The acupuncturist will insert very thin, sterile needles into specific points on your body. You might feel a slight prick or tingling sensation, but it should not be painful. The number of needles used can vary depending on the condition being treated.
-
Relaxation Period: Once the needles are in place, you'll typically rest for about 20-30 minutes. During this time, many people feel deeply relaxed and may even fall asleep.
-
Needle Removal: After the treatment period, the acupuncturist will remove the needles. This process is usually quick and painless.
-
Post-Treatment: The acupuncturist may discuss your experience during the session and provide recommendations for follow-up treatments or self-care practices to enhance the benefits of acupuncture.

Each session can last between 30 minutes to an hour, and the frequency of treatments varies based on individual needs and conditions.
Reiki Energy Healing
Reiki Energy Healing is a holistic practice that promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being through the transfer of universal life force energy. Originating in Japan in the early 20th century, Reiki is based on the belief that this energy flows through all living things and is essential for health and vitality.

How Does Reiki Work?
During a Reiki session, a trained practitioner channels energy into the client's body by placing their hands lightly on or just above specific areas. This process aims to balance the body's energy fields, remove blockages, and support the body's natural healing processes. Sessions are typically conducted in a calm, relaxing environment, and clients remain fully clothed.

Benefits of Reiki
Reiki is known for its ability to:
-
Reduce Stress and Promote Relaxation: Many clients experience deep relaxation and a sense of peace during and after sessions.
-
Alleviate Pain: Reiki can help manage pain and support recovery from injuries or surgeries.
-
Enhance Emotional Well-being: It can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, promoting emotional balance.
-
Support Overall Health: Regular Reiki sessions can contribute to a sense of overall well-being and vitality.
What to Expect in a Session
A typical Reiki session lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. The practitioner will place their hands in various positions on or above your body, focusing on areas that need healing. You might feel warmth, tingling, or a gentle pulsing sensation. Many people find the experience deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.
